‘Excel found unreadable content in Book_Name’ Error in Excel

Encountering the Excel corruption errors and finding the Excel recovery tools is really a tricky as well as unwanted task. But still excel corruption can’t be avoided and may be indicative through some of the error messages. One such error message is as follows:

“Excel found unreadable content in Book_Name. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook”

This is the error message encountered when you try to open the Excel workbook. Clicking ‘Yes’ in the dialog box may show you a recovery report:

Removed Records: PivotTable report from /xl/pivotCache/pivotCacheDefinition1.xml part (PivotTable cache)

Opening the same file in the Microsoft SharPoint Web Part report page, the error message may appear like:

“The workbook that you selected cannot be opened. The workbook may be in an unsupported file format, or it may be corrupt. Would you like to try and open this file in Excel?”

The error message is itself stating the cause i.e. corruption. However the other reasons may include problematic nature of the used KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). This is the feature supported by the Excel PivotTable of Analysis Services. KPI is a set of calculations which are defined in an Analysis Services model to represent key business metrics which can be displayed in reports, dashboards, etc. This is possible that one or more KPIs have an expression in the Current Time Member property. Unable to read file – Excel error message

As the chief accountant of a firm, your daily activities encompass dealing in big transactions and figures that essentially need to be saved and securely stored in the spreadsheets and workbooks. Thus it’s MS Excel all the way and it’s this particular feature of MS Office that always remains open on your laptop screen.

Rampant use of a particular feature may result the screen to freeze for a stipulated period of time but if you are among those whose spread sheets give out the error message “Unable to read file”  while opening and then it is customarily followed by a grey screen, you need to review the situation carefully. When you open it in quick view, you see that the file exists but you are unable to access it. The said error can get reflected in varied ways though the factors instigating it and the manifestations might differ.

Another situation that can prompt the display of the same error goes like this:-

You open an excel file that you have been working on for weeks now and a window message stating, “The workbook you are opening contains macros. Some macros may contain viruses,” flashes on the screen offering you a choice to choose from three buttons that says Disable Macros (default), Enable Macros, & Do Not Open. You are amazed to see this as you get a periodic virus scan done every month and you are dead sure that the concerned file does not have macros. You are further confirmed when you check the Macro menus after opening the file and find no macros but immediately after the macro message you are bombarded with another shock in quick succession “Unable to Read File”. When you try viewing the data by opening the file using the text editor you see that its still there.

If you are encountering a similar problem, do not loose hope because there are times when simple yet beneficial troubleshooting mechanisms set similar complications.

Provided below are a few of them.

•    Norton Anti- virus sometimes conflicts with Excel and creates these faults. The workaround available is uninstalling Norton, uninstalling Office, rebooting and reinstalling Office.

•    Sometimes add-ins hinders proper functioning in Excel. Disable them to gauge the difference.

•    Remove office then remove \program files\ ms office. You will be required to remove excel from the registry file. If you are not an old hand at it, do not try this as it necessitates backing up the registry first and then restoring it in case there are discrepancies while operating the Registry Editor. This might involve reinstalling the operating system and Microsoft support cannot provide any comprehensive solution if your registry is handled incorrectly.

•    Sometimes the files with an .xlb extension that Excel uses to store toolbar information turns corrupt and gives rise to similar complexities. Delete all
the .xlb files you can find to see if it makes any difference but you are liable to lose any toolbar customization that you might have made in Excel.

If these troubleshooting mechanisms work, nothing like it but if it doesn’t better arrange for a backup. You won’t have to search longer cause you have help at hand.

“An Error Occurred Initializing VBA Libraries”

Or

“The Timer driver is not installed on this system. Microsoft Excel cannot run without the Timer driver. Choose the help button for more information.”

The VBA libraries contain all the required functions and tools for the VBA objects and for the multimedia applications, the functions to manage them are stored in a module called mmsystem.dll. If this has a wrong entry in the system.ini or is damaged, then it can result in these error messages. So it is always recommended never to disable it so that the essential applications like MS Excel may work properly.
